MARCH 2001
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lexington, VA -- Violinist Jasper Wood and pianist Dave Riley come to the Lenfest Center for an evening of 20th century masterpieces and contemporary compositions. The concert, sponsored by Sonoklect, is at 8:00pm on March 24 in the Lenfest Center on the campus of Washington and Lee. The public is invited and no tickets are required.
The feature work on the concert will be the premiere of Terry Vosbein’s “A Pursuit of Happiness: A Sonata for Violin and Piano.” This five movement work which explores the realities of that famous line from our nation’s declaration of independence was composed for Wood and Riley last year. Vosbein is associate professor of music at Washington and Lee and the director of the Sonoklect Festival.
The program will also feature a premiere by contemporary composer Mathew Fuerst. His Sonata-Fantasie, which was recently composed for Wood and Riley, is an homage to the Scriaban work by the same name. Alongside these two premieres will be two classic twentieth-century works, the Suite Italienne of Igor Stravinsky and Prokofiev’s great Sonata in D Major.
Canadian violinist Jasper Wood gave his first public performance at the age of five. Since then he has captured the hearts of music lovers with his “ability to recreate lyric poetry” while making a name for himself in concert tours throughout the United States and Canada. Pianist, David Riley has kept equally busy, providing dazzling accompaniments to some of today’s finest new stars.
Following the concert the audience is invited to join the performers in a reception. For more information, call Terry Vosbein at 463-8851.
